Abstract

Literacy culture remains one of the major challenges in elementary education, particularly in fostering students' reading interest and reading aloud skills. SD Muhammadiyah 1 Sidoarjo has implemented literacy activities; however, the implementation required systematic assistance to optimize teachers' capacity and students' participation in literacy programs. This community service program aimed to strengthen the implementation of school literacy culture through a structured reading aloud assistance program. The activities were conducted using a Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach involving teachers and Grade III students. The program consisted of initial needs assessment, preparation of literacy materials, teacher mentoring, implementation of reading aloud activities, classroom observation, and evaluation of program outcomes. The results demonstrated improvements in students' confidence, reading fluency, pronunciation, and participation during classroom literacy activities. Teachers also showed better competence in facilitating interactive reading aloud sessions and utilizing reading corners as literacy learning media. Furthermore, the literacy program created a more conducive learning atmosphere and strengthened students' reading habits before classroom instruction. This community service demonstrates that continuous mentoring, active teacher participation, and supportive school environments contribute significantly to strengthening literacy culture in elementary schools. Continuous collaboration between schools, teachers, and stakeholders is recommended to ensure the sustainability of literacy programs.
